VIENNA — In a vibrant gathering marked by inspiration, cultural pride, and a spirit of unity, Babaylan Austria, a Filipino women’s organization, celebrated International Women’s Day on March 6, 2026, in Vienna’s 2nd District. The event brought together members of the Filipino community, representatives from the Philippine Embassy, leaders from Vienna’s local government, and professionals from the health sector to honor the achievements and enduring strength of women.

For nearly three decades, Babaylan Austria has served as a platform for Filipino women in Austria—empowering them through community engagement, advocacy, and cultural connection. This year’s celebration highlighted the organization’s mission of solidarity and its commitment to supporting women both in Austria and in the Philippines.

A Message of Compassion and Unity

In her keynote address, Carmen Pacaigue, President of Babaylan Austria, delivered an inspiring message encouraging women to uplift each other through empathy rather than competition.

“Let us be strong side by side—not in competition, but in compassion,” Pacaigue said. “Our mission is not only to empower but to embrace; not just to lead, but to listen; not only to build platforms, but to build bridges between cultures, generations, and between hearts.”

She urged women to continue supporting one another and to remain united in their efforts to build stronger communities.

“Today let us raise our voices. Let us promise to be each other’s keepers. Let us be bold, be kind, and be unbreakable together. Let us continue to shine—not alone, but as one.”

Her message was echoed by Carol Pewal, Vice President of Babaylan Austria, who reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to empowerment, collaboration, and solidarity among women.

Honoring the Legacy of Babaylan

During the event, Malou Reininger, founder of Babaylan Austria, reflected on the strength and potential within every woman. She encouraged participants to recognize their own power while fostering cooperation between women and men.

“You have so much capacity in you. We have the power to decide—it is time for us to become strong,” Reininger said. “We should prove that we are powerful, but this does not mean putting men down. Instead, we should inspire them and walk together with them.”

Imelda Perez Papai, another key figure in the organization’s history, shared insights into the development of Babaylan Austria and the challenges the group faced during her leadership. Her reflection highlighted the resilience and dedication that helped the organization grow into a respected voice for Filipino women in Austria.

Embassy Recognizes the Spirit of the Babaylan

Representing the Philippine Embassy in Vienna, Chryzel Sicat, Third Secretary and Vice Consul, extended greetings to the women present and acknowledged the Philippines’ broader celebration of women throughout the month of March.

“This year’s Women’s Month is dedicated to the Babaylan—the first women leaders in pre-colonial Philippine society,” Sicat said. “These women were advisers, healers, mothers, and community leaders before colonization.”

She noted that the spirit of these ancestral figures continues to live on among Filipina women around the world.

“The spirit of the Babaylan can be seen in the Filipinas here in Austria. Thank you for empowering each other and for creating a space of support for your members. Today we celebrate you and all that you can do for the women’s population in Austria and in the Philippines.”

Recognition from Vienna’s Local Government

The event also received strong support from Vienna’s city leadership. City Council Member Luise Däger-Gregori, praised Babaylan Austria for its decades of work.

“For 28 years, Babaylan Austria has stood for courage, solidarity, and responsibility,” Däger-Gregori said. “You advocate for the strengthening of Filipino women in education, business, culture, and society—both here in Austria and in the Philippines.”

She emphasized that Babaylan Austria’s work goes beyond assistance, highlighting the importance of dignity and self-determination.

“Babaylan Austria is not just an organization—it is a sign of what is possible when commitment, heart, and responsibility come together.”

Community Support and Cultural Celebration

Among the distinguished guests were Magdalena Beng Adam, a long-time supporter and friend of Babaylan Austria, and Elwira Sebera, Director of Nursing at Malteser Care GmbH. Sebera’s leadership has helped many Filipino nurses build their professional careers and integrate successfully into Austrian society, providing both employment opportunities and hope for many women.

The program also celebrated Filipino culture. Performers Tonette and Eden delighted the audience with a lively medley of Bikolano songs, adding warmth and joy to the occasion.

A moving highlight of the event came when Babaylan members publicly expressed their commitments to the organization’s mission—affirming their dedication to empowering women and strengthening the community.

Looking Forward

The celebration concluded with closing remarks from Dorcy Aigner, past president of Babaylan Austria, who thanked the guests, officers, and members for participating in the meaningful gathering.

As the event came to a close, the message of the day remained clear: the strength of women grows even greater when they stand together. Through compassion, cooperation, and cultural pride, Babaylan Austria continues to embody the enduring spirit of the Babaylan—women who lead, nurture, and inspire across generations and borders.
